Ernst Udet's Jasta 37 in 1917

The Royal Prussian Jagdstaffel 37, usually referred to as Jasta 37 scored over 70 victories during the first World War. Founded early in 1917, it served until the end of the war. A total of 7 fighter aces served in the squadron, including the second-highest scoring german ace Ernst Udet.

At the age of 22, he is one of the youngest aces and was the highest scoring German ace to survive the war. His 62 confirmed victories were second only to the "Red Baron" Manfred von Richthofen.

The painting depicts german Jasta 37 Albatros D.Va fighters engaging british Sopwith Camels in late 1917. Ernst Udet's plane is the one with the lozenge camo and the "U" letter visible.
