RCAF in Europe

Hawker Typhoons of the 440th sqn

The 440th RCAF squadron was formed in 1932 as No. 11 Squadron. Originally entering the second world war an air-defence squadron, it was moved to the UK and became the 440 (Fighter Bomber) Squadron on 8 February 1944. Initially equipped with Hawker Hurricanes, the squadron started operating on Hawker Typhoons early in 1944.

The squadron supported and followed the allied armies through France, Netherlands and then into Germany. Although the Canadian Typhoons operated mostly as dive bombers they also flew top cover to protect their aircraft from interception.

The painting depicts canadian 440th squadron Hawker Typhoons getting ready for a dive bombing attack on a german column.
