Hawker Typhoons of the 440 RCAF sqn

One of Robert's most known paintings up to date, it depicts two Hawker Typhoons from the 440th RCAF sqn during an attack on a german motorized column in 1944. The squadron supported and followed the allied armies through France, Netherlands and then into Germany. Although the Canadian Typhoons operated mostly as dive bombers they also flew top cover missions to protect allied aircraft from interception.

Wladyslaw Bartkowiak in his Fokker D.VII

Sgt Wladyslaw Bartkowiak is the brother of pilot Antoni Bartkowiak. At the age of 17, he joined the german Luftwaffe where he worked as a mechanic. After the Greater Poland Uprising in which he actively took part, he expressed the wish to join the pilots' school. He soon became the best pilot of the school, for which he was awarded a commemorative golden watch from general Dowbor-Musnicki. He took part in many missions during the Polish-Soviet war. His extraordinary mechanic skills allowed him to repair his downed aircraft behind enemy lines on a few occassions. He was shot down and killed after a long air combat with the soviet pilot A.D. Shyrinkin barely at the age of 20.

Night Hunters

The de Havilland DH.98 Mosquito was a British multi-role combat aircraft constructed almost entirely of wood and thus nicknamed "The Wooden Wonder". At it's introduction n 1941, the Mosquito was one of the fastest planes in the world. Performing multiple roles troughout the war, the "Mossie" is probably most known for the "special raids" and nighttime fighter-bomber missions. The painting depicts such a mission; a fast and precise attack on a german-controlled railroad station, the aircraft about to disappear in the dark of the night.

The Workhorse

The Yakovlev Yak-12 is a russian, light multirole STOL aircraft designed in 1947 by Yakovlev's team to meet a requirement of the Soviet Air Force for a new liaison and utility plane. After being lengthened to improve weight distribution, with further strengthening of the structure and other minor changes it became the Yak-12M. It was also licence-built from 1956 in Poland as the WSK-4 Okecie, or Jak-12M (Polish spelling of the Russian name). Grunau Baby

Schneider's Grunau Baby was a single-seat sailplane first built in Germany in 1931, with around 6000 built all over the world. It was relatively easy to build from plans, flew well, and most important of all - it could withstand occasional hard landings and was easy to repair. These qualities made it a perfect glider for new pilots.

SZD-6X "Nietoperz" ("Bat")

A tailless experimental saiplane with 4 (sic!) ailerons. Flown between 1951-59 it was proven too difficult to steer and did not enter mass production. Only a few pilots were able to fly it before the tests ended. The glider is currently exposed at the Aviation Museum of Krakow and remains a curiosity for saiplane modellers.
